Lighthouse ghost stories lure paranormal group
|
Professional ghostbusters are investigating the things that go bump in the night at the Pensacola Lighthouse and the keeper's house.
A group named Pensacola Paranormal Research visited the lighthouse in February to see if the reported ghost stories were fact or fiction.
"They'd heard the rumors that have been circulating for years that there are ghosts there," said Phyllis Sparks, spokeswoman for the lighthouse. "They wanted to look around and see what they could see."
Or not see.
There are tales of a reappearing blood stain, doors that mysteriously unlock, open or slam - and sightings of an elusive lady in white.
Sparks said she does not believe the lighthouse is haunted, but volunteer coordinator Diane Levi does.
"There are enough people out there that have had experiences that we feel there is something," Levi said. "Once I was closing up and I heard footsteps going down the hallway, but everyone had left."
Levi said people believe there are three ghosts at the lighthouse - a woman and two men.
"The paranormal group claimed that they've photographed light orbs," she said. "One they caught was over a door that had been quite a problem."
According to the group's Web site - which contains photos they shot of orbs (said to be a spirit's energy) at the lighthouse - the group "did not conduct an actual investigation," and the point of the trip was to learn the history of the lighthouse and hear the accounts of people who felt a presence there.
"We have not reviewed all of the photos and videos ... our meters and thermal scanners did not detect anything out of the ordinary," the Web site said.
Levi said that this spring the lighthouse will be filmed for a Travel Channel documentary about haunted places. She said the program is scheduled to air in the fall.
